A computer systems job gained nearly 2,000 jobs in August, the Labor Department said Monday.
That was the highest monthly gain since January 2016, when a record number of jobs were lost.
But the overall jobless rate fell to 5.3 percent from 6.1 percent in August.
The gains came in a number of industries, including retail, hospitality, education and healthcare.
The number of computer system jobs increased by more than 700,000 in August to 1.46 million.
That is more than the 2.1 million jobs added in July, according to the Labor Bureau.
The labor-market recovery has helped create 1.5 million new jobs in the past year.
But employers added only about 1.4 million jobs in July and August, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
